Information for Personal Assistants

What is a Personal Assistant?

A Personal Assistant is someone that is employed by a disabled person or their representative to support them to live independently. A Personal Assistant may be asked to assist with all aspects of daily living, enabling the individual to have continuity and flexibility with the care that they need.

Who can be a Personal Assistant?

Anyone can become a Personal Assistant. You should think about what you could offer to a disabled person including:

  • Your personal qualities
  • Your skills
  • Any experience that you may have
  • Your enthusiasm and willingness to learn the role

If I apply for a Personal Assistant role, who will decide if I get the job?

Each individual Employer will decide whom they will employ. This will initially be based upon your application form so be sure to include all relevant information about your knowledge, skills and experience.

If your application is successful, then you will usually be invited to attend an interview with the Employer.

 What checks will there be?

The role of a Personal Assistant will be subject to reference checks; you should include the contact details of two referees on your application form.

Personal Assistants are also usually required to complete a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, formerly known as a Criminal Record Bureau (CRB) check.

The expense of the DBS check is usually met by the Employer, however if you have recently had a DBS check completed, you can register with the DBS Update Service here.

Please note that the DBS Update Service charge a small fee for registering with them.

The benefit of registering your DBS check with the DBS Update Service is that potential Employers can check your criminal record check quickly, which may mean that you can start working for the Employer sooner.
