Personal Care / Home Care Assistant JK1120
Personal Care / Home Care Assistant
Bamber Bridge, Preston
Job Ref: JK1120
We are a small team responsible for delivering care to a male in his 20’s who requires 24/7 support. We are now looking for individuals to join the team and deliver a great experience on a two to one basis.
The individual spends each day at a local day center which supports people with severe disabilities, this finishes at 3.30pm. You will be responsible for collecting him, driving him home and caring for him through to his bedtime routine. Hours will usually be Monday – Friday, between 3.00pm and 7.00pm. We need someone who can be flexible around the needs of the individual and to support him outside of normal hours for ad hoc hospital appointments etc.
He has a bright personality and extremely sociable, he beams with anything that stimulates his audio and visual senses. He loves music, watching TV, particularly Strictly Come Dancing and enjoys going for walks and being in the outdoors. If it is windy, he loves it even more! Supermarket lights are one of his favorites as well as people watching. It’s therefore important that you appreciate his need for variety, whether it’s a walk in the park or taking him out for activites, we will expect you to use your initiative to keep him busy and engaged.
It’s important that you take the time to get to know him, so you can build a trusting relationship and know exactly what his needs are. Whilst on a day to day basis his medical situation is well managed, we would expect you to be looking for signs for anything out of the ordinary and acting accordingly. He doesn’t cry, so you have to get to know his cues and gestures, he will only show either a happy emotion or a sad one.
With a variety of care needs, nil by mouth and fed only via his PEG, you will be responsible for his medical and personal hygiene needs. One of his main concerns are his extremely brittle bones in his legs, which can fracture very easily, it’s therefore important that he is supervised at all times. Equally he can struggle with his breathing, which is something that you will also get used to managing, ensuring he is always 100% safe.
In the main, a care agency will undertake his bath and bedtime routine but there will be days where you will be expected to undertake this with the other PA on duty with you.
You will have a great working environment where your job is purely to care for this individual and his needs. Working with an easygoing family who take everything in their stride, with the care of their son at the centre of everything they do.
Ideally, we are looking for someone from a care background, however we would consider providing the right training for whoever joins the team, so this is a great opportunity if you want to try something different.
If you lack the experience but can demonstrate the qualities and behaviours that we are looking for then we would like to hear from you.
